Grand Theft Auto III (also shortened into GTA 3) is an action-adventure video game that is the first main entry in the Grand Theft Auto series since GTA 2. It is developed by DMA Design and published by Rockstar Games.

The game is played from a third-person perspective and its world is navigated on foot or by vehicle.

Gameplay

GTA 3 is an action-adventure game played from a third-person standpoint. Players need to complete various missions with a definite objective. The players are also allowed to play several active missions simultaneously. Some missions need players to wait for further instructions or events to complete.

Grand Theft Auto III game allows its players to roam freely within the game's open world and also complete optional side missions to earn extra benefits. Players can run, jump or use vehicles as they want to navigate the game's world.

Plot

The plot of Grand Theft Auto III is separated from its predecessors. Its narrative follows the events of Claude's life, who is a silent criminal betrayed by his girlfriend Catalina during a bank heist.

Claude begins to work for different factions in the city to exact revenge on his girlfriend for betraying and leaving him to die. In this, he quickly becomes entangled in a world of gangs, crime, and corruption.

Liberty City

It is set within the crime-riddled fictional city named Liberty City, based on New York and some other American cities. There are different districts and three Islands in Liberty City.

The islands are,

• Portland: This is the first area the player starts to interact within the game. There are docks, the Red Light District, warehouses, factories, markets, garages as well as some useful suppliers present in the island. The area largely consists of the workmen in old cars, the Leones, Triads, and Diablos. Players will also find hookers, pimps, laborers, dockworkers, politicians, and general scum here.

• Staunton Island: This is the second district that unlocks as the game progresses. It is the central business district where all the big business takes place in Liberty City and is dominated by rich, powerful, and corporate. The resident gangs are the Yakuza, the Yardies, and Colombian Cartel.

• Shoreside Vale: This is the suburban area of Liberty City where the ending of the game takes place. It consists of many of Liberty City's more affluent gangsters from Southside Hoods and the Colombian Cartel, Liberty City's commuter-belt is a patchwork of swimming pools, picket fences, backyards, basketball nets, street gangs, and five-car garages.
