It is the 9th fighting game in the Mortal Kombat series, developed by the newly named NetherRealm Studios. The game’s plot starts from retelling the events of the first three games of the Mortal Kombat series and features both old and new characters. 

Gameplay

The blows of the game have changed a lot compared to the previous games of the series. Instead of having a few blows and kicks divided between high and low, there's now a button for each limb: front arm, front leg, back arm, and back leg.

There are also some combined martial arts techniques that players can execute with little effort. There is also a new addition of intro and outro animations for each character. 

The controls of the game are similar to Mortal Kombat 3, with the clash limited to a single plane, the fastest pace of struggle. The combo attacks are akin to those found in MK and MKII. 

Mortal Kombat game features three different single-player modes,

• Story Mode: The player assumes the role of several different pre-designated characters
• Tournament ladder: It reminiscent of the earlier MK games which features a sub-boss, boss, and an animated ending for each character
• Training mode: It allows players to hone their skills with their chosen character.

The Mortal Kombat game also includes several mini-games, such as – The classic Test, Your Might, Test Your Sight, Test Your Strike, and Test Your Luck. The game also comprises of a massive 300 mission challenge in a new mode called The Challenge Tower.

The game offers 28 playable characters for Playstation 3 users, and 27 playable characters for Xbox 360, in addition to 4 downloadable characters (DLC), 3 unplayable bosses, and 4 secret character battles.
